The Patriots, a bookies nightmare

The New England Patriots have been a nightmare for the bookies for many years, but this years Patriots are showing signs to be more than just a nightmare. They would be better compared to a Nightmare on Elm street movie where the dreams reoccur and comes to life each week. The Patriots who are 54-23 ATS (3 pushes) over there past 80 games (a streak that spans over 5 seasons) are off to a 6-0 ATS streak this year where they have not just covered but have beat the spread by a complete blow out in most games.

In an article on covers.com this week: Mike Seba, senior oddsmaker for Las Vegas Sports Consultants (LVSC), the company that makes the betting line for many Nevada hotels commented on the topic of the Patriots being a bookies nightmare by saying ”I hate it that every week we (the house) need them not to cover and they keep covering.”

While the thinking that the oddsmakers can put up any number and the Pats will cover it is as square of thinking as square thinking comes; how many examples does it take for one to start wondering who is the real square in this scenario?

This week the Patriots are at the Dolphins and while I’m not foolish enough to call the Patriots -16.5 the Fred Krueger lock of the week and I might even pass on this game, the one thing I know for sure is: there is no way in hell I’ll be betting the Dolphins as doing so would violate 3 of my top 10 rules of NFL betting to live by. Those 3 rules are:

Never bet against Tom Brady
Never bet against Bill Belichick
Never bet Against the Patriots

Sure some might say that this is all a single rule, but I purposely structured it this way. There are occasions where I might break a single of my betting rules when circumstances dictate doing so, but there are no circumstances I can think of that would ever warrant breaking two of my top ten rules let alone breaking three of them.

To sum it all up betting against the Patriots is comparable to going skinny dipping in Crystal Lake, having sex while friends who should be in their cabin have gone missing, walking upstairs to follow the evil noises you’re hearing and standing next to the dead body of the guy holding a weapon whom you’ve already killed two or more times and watched come back to life. All of these things should be left for either the bookies or the characters in horror movies to deal with. Don’t take them upon yourself.
